Thorin II, also known as Thorin Oakenshield, was a Dwarf of Erebor and the son of Thráin II. When he was young he fought bravely in the War of Dwarves and Orcs in the Battle of Azanulbizar before moving to the Ered Luin, where he became King. He journeyed east in 2941 and met Gandalf, and both decided that they should journey to Erebor and reclaim it from Smaug. This they did and for a brief time Thorin II was called King Under The Mountain, but he was soon after slain, along with Fili and Kili, in the Battle of Five Armies.
