The Battle of Five Armies was a massive battle in 2941 of the Third Age, fought around the slopes of Erebor. It involved the Men of Dale, the Elves of Mirkwood, and the Dwarves of Erebor and the Iron Hills on one "team," and Orcs and Wargs on the other. There was also the assistance of Beorn and the Eagles in the battle. The team of Elves, Men, and Dwarves had the victory, though Thorin II was slain, as well as Fili and Kili, who died defending him. Bolg, the leader of the Orcs of the Misty Mountains, was slain as well. Gandalf participated in the battle, and one might say that Bilbo did as well, though he was more of an observer.
